Historical Shiraz

Shiraz, a History as Long as 6,500 Years

Historical Shiraz is one of the most famous cities in Iran, in the south of the country. It has a long history. Though it is considered to be the home of the Persian race, it is home to various people such as Aryans, Semites, and Turks, with various cultures and traditions.

Historical Shiraz is the capital of Fars Province. This province enjoys about 3,000 national heritage sites which accounts for 9% of Iran’s historical sites. In this province, there are also some famous world heritage sites including Persepolis, Pasargadae, and Eram Garden which is a true representation of Persian Gardens.

A lot of studies and excavations have been done in and near historical Shiraz. In the second phase of archaeological studies on Poustchi hills in Shiraz, Iran, some ancient relics were discovered. The excavations were co-organized by Shiraz Art University and Iranian Centre for Archaeological Research. The excavated places named “Shamsabad” or “Bakoun” in ancient times are thought to be home to one of the earliest civilizations.

These relics demonstrate that Shiraz belongs to civilizations more ancient than previously thought.

In the first phase of studies done last year, reported by Mr. Arab, the head of the research team, a thousand antiquities, dating back to 5000 BC, were unearthed.

The second phase of studies aimed at excavations of some parts of adobe constructions. It is reported that they go back over 6,500 years. In fact, it adds to the history of Shiraz, the green and ancient land of Persia.

The findings in adobe structures reveal a rich source of information such as the layout of houses, clay pieces and stone tools which all represent the lifestyle of people living in ancient Shiraz.

Some bones were also found. They are estimated to belong to the Sassanid Era (224-651). It seems that these bones belong to nomads since no cemetery was found there.
